Pancakes vs. Waffles and Everything more!

This is really the quintessential debate- pancakes vs. waffles, which one are you?
Read on to get a comprehensive article about both (hey, no bias!) and find my favourite recipes linked below!

First up, PANCAKES

What are pancakes?

Pancakes are simple ‘pan ‘cakes’ i.e. flat and round cakes cooked on a pan or a griddle. Usually made of pantry ingredients like flour, eggs, buttermilk/dairy, butter and occasionally a leavening agent. It is most commonly consumed along with maple syrup and some butter.

The American Pancakes

Thick and fluffy pancakes that are much more substantial, and are filled with air pockets because of the leavening agents used.

European Pancakes (Crêpes)

They are very thin pancakes and a tad crispier as well. They don't contain any leavening agents and are made on a special pan. The fancier version or the ‘crepe suzette’ is made by flambéing some orange liquor with orange juice and letting the crepes soak the syrup.

Dutch Baby Pancakes

A Dutch baby pancake, sometimes called a German pancake, a Bismarck is similar to a Yorkshire pudding. The eggs are whipped vigorously that results in the pancakes rising (like a soufflé) in the oven.

Russian Pancakes ( Sirniki/ Syrniki)

They are traditionally made from tvorog, a fresh cheese formed from soured milk. It is a dense one but pairs amazingly with some jam.

Next up, WAFFLES

What are waffles?

A waffle is a dish made from a batter containing leavening agents that is cooked between two plates that give the batter the classic shape and characteristics. It contains flour, eggs, dairy and some leavening agents.

American Waffle

Think light, crispy waffles in maple syrup and much more! Created using the basic ingredients of flour, egg, dairy (buttermilk for extra softness) and then pressed into the waffle ‘maker’.

Belgian Waffle

Belgian waffles contain yeast along with the regular pantry ingredients that gives it an incredible fluffiness and texture. They are also baked in larger pans that contain bigger hinges and create extra crispy waffles, plus an airier shape.

Honk Kong Egg Waffles

Refereed to as egg puffs, eggettes or bubble waffles, these egg waffles are cooked in a special mold that give them their classic round shape or ‘bubbles'. They are made of sweetened batter and are consumed by folding them in half.

These are only a handful of types of waffles and pancakes, with each community having its own twist.

But, the question is- pancakes vs. waffles, which one are you?
